Patella Luxation

Patella luxation is a condition in dogs and sometimes cats where the kneecap slides or pops out of place from the normal groove in the femur. This can cause lameness, pain and osteoarthritis in the affected knee(s). Patella luxation can be caused by a shallow femoral groove or malalignment of the limb. Small breed dogs are most at risk but can be seen in some large breed dogs as well. It is a genetic condition in most cases and dogs with this condition should not be bred to prevent passing the condition onto the offspring. The condition can be surgically corrected.
